GTM Engineer Salary in 2026: Three Jobs Hiding Under One Title
GTM engineer salary sources disagree by 2x, from a $94,573 average to $191,356. We pulled 21 posted pay ranges at 14 companies, including Clay's own, to show why: the title covers three jobs, and the postings say what moves you up.
A GTM engineer salary is the pay for the person who builds a company's revenue systems in tools like Clay, and in October 2026 the US sources put the average anywhere from $94,573 to $191,356 because the one title covers three different jobs.
A town library can run two ways. In the first, a patron walks up to the reference desk, asks for a book on bridges, and waits while the librarian goes into the stacks and fetches it. The librarian is excellent at this. The line grows. In the second, the same librarian spends a month building a catalog, and from then on the patrons find the bridges, and the trains, and the tax law, on their own, while the librarian builds the next thing. Both librarians know the stacks equally well. Only one of them is still standing at the desk.
A GTM engineer salary is the pay for the person who builds a company’s revenue systems in tools like Clay, and in October 2026 the US sources put the average anywhere from $94,573 to $191,356 because the one title covers three different jobs. The short version:
- The list and campaign role. Fetches lists and runs campaigns on request. Modeled job-board averages sit here, about $78,000 to $116,500 on ZipRecruiter.
- The systems builder. Builds the tables, waterfalls and routing the whole team runs. Posted base ranges at venture-backed companies center on about $151,200 to $220,000.
- The software engineer on the GTM team. Writes production code and agents for sales and marketing. Posted ranges run $170,000 to $405,000 at the companies we checked.
The finding the top results leave out: the job postings at the top of the range say, in their own words, what separates the bands, and it is adoption. Clay’s own GTM engineering manager posting asks the team to “track performance, adoption, and business impact of everything you build” and to move engineers “from ticket-takers to strategic problem-solvers.” The reference desk is the ticket.
How much does a GTM engineer make in 2026?
Here is every source a searcher meets on the first page, opened on October 2, 2026, with what each one counts. The role is young (Clay, which says it coined the title in 2023, counts about 100 GTM engineer listings a month), so no source has much history, and the GTM engineer guide covers what the role does day to day.
| Source | Figure | What it counts | Sample |
|---|---|---|---|
| ZipRecruiter | $94,573 average; $78,000 (25th) to $116,500 (90th) | Modeled pay from postings, as of September 13, 2026 | Not shown |
| BLS, sales engineers | $124,900 median | The nearest federal occupation, May 2025 | National survey |
| Bloomberry | $127,500 median | Posted salary ranges in 2025 GTM engineering postings | 1,000 postings analyzed |
| Apollo’s guide, citing aggregators | $132,000 to $241,000 | ”Most job aggregators,” 2025, published February 25, 2026 | Not shown |
| Glassdoor | $191,356 average total pay; $144,000 to $261,000 (25th to 75th) | Self-reported total pay, base plus $48,000 to $90,000 additional | 30 salaries |
| Our pull of posted ranges | $151,200 to $220,000 median range | Base ranges at 10 companies hiring systems builders, October 2, 2026 | 13 postings |
Read down the second column and the trouble is plain. The highest average is a little more than twice the lowest. A GTM engineer who asks a search engine what they should earn can walk away with either number, and a hiring manager can too.
Why do GTM engineer salary sources disagree by 2x?
Start with the plainest reason. They are measuring different things, and only one of the six counts the same thing twice in a row.
- Base or total. GTM engineer compensation is quoted both ways. Glassdoor’s $191,356 is total pay. Its base range is $96,000 to $172,000, and additional pay of $48,000 to $90,000 sits on top. Bloomberry, Apollo’s aggregators and our pull are base salary.
- Modeled, posted or reported. ZipRecruiter models pay from postings and shows no sample. Bloomberry took the ranges companies posted. Glassdoor collects what employees report, and 30 reports is a small room.
- Where the sample lives. ZipRecruiter’s top-paying places for the title are Pennington County and Spearfish, South Dakota, at $146,975 and $131,992. Those are real figures for thin data, and they say more about how few GTM engineer jobs exist outside the startup cities than about South Dakota.
- What the title means. A bigger sample does not wash this one out. A posting called GTM engineer can be a campaign-automation job at a large company, an infrastructure job at a startup, or a staff software engineer at an AI lab.
Bloomberry’s own data hints at the spread. Its median is $127,500, while the top payers it named, Vercel at $252,000 and OpenAI at $250,000, sit at about twice that. A median of a field this wide describes few of the people in it.
What do companies post for GTM engineer pay?
Posted ranges are the cleanest GTM engineering salary data we have, because a company writes them down before it meets the candidate. New York requires businesses with four or more employees to “list compensation ranges” in job postings, and to say whether a role is commission-based (New York State DOL), and many San Francisco and remote-US postings carry ranges too.
So we pulled them. On October 2, 2026 we read the public job boards of 50-odd companies hiring on Ashby and Greenhouse and kept every US posting with “GTM” and “Engineer” in the title and a posted base range, leaving out sales, account executive and manager roles. That left 21 postings at 14 companies. The script and the full list sit with this post’s research notes. It is a sample of venture-backed companies, mostly in New York and San Francisco, and it is not a survey.
| Company | Posting | Location | Posted base range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Snowflake | GTM Engineer, ABM, Advertising and Growth Marketing | Menlo Park | $96,000 to $126,000 |
| Mixpanel | Delivery Engineer III, GTM (2 postings) | New York, remote US | $137,000 to $185,000 |
| Clay | GTM Engineer, Systems and Infrastructure | New York | $140,000 to $200,000 |
| Attio | Forward Deployed GTM Engineer (2 postings) | New York, San Francisco | $150,000 to $200,000 |
| Sierra | GTM Engineer | San Francisco | $150,000 to $230,000 |
| Ramp | GTM Business Systems Engineer (2 postings) | New York | $151,200 to $230,000 |
| ClickHouse | GTM Engineer, AI and Automation | US | $160,000 to $220,000 |
| Mercor | GTM Engineer | San Francisco | $175,000 to $250,000 |
| Baseten | GTM Engineer | New York | $175,000 to $200,000 |
| Decagon | GTM Analytics Engineer | San Francisco | $190,000 to $230,000 |
| Vanta | Sr. AI GTM Engineer | Remote US | $195,000 to $229,000 |
| Vercel | Software Engineer, GTM | San Francisco | $170,000 to $260,000 |
| OpenAI | Software Engineer and Applied AI Software Engineer, GTM Growth Engineering (2) | San Francisco | $266,000 to $405,000 |
| Anthropic | Four GTM engineering roles (data, AgentOps, staff software) | San Francisco | $320,000 to $405,000 |
Three clusters fall out without forcing. One posting sits alone near $100,000. Thirteen postings at ten companies sit between $137,000 and $250,000, with a median low end of $151,200 and a median high end of $220,000. Seven postings at three companies, all titled software or data engineer on the GTM team, run from $170,000 to $405,000. Almost every posting above the first cluster offers equity.
What are the three jobs hiding under the GTM engineer title?
Read the postings instead of the numbers and the three clusters become three different jobs, each described in the employer’s own words.
- The campaign and list role. Snowflake’s $96,000 to $126,000 posting asks the engineer to “serve as the primary technical partner to the internal Paid Media & ABM team.” One team, its requests, its campaigns. The reference desk, and useful work. ZipRecruiter’s modeled band of $78,000 to $116,500 likely counts many roles like it.
- The systems builder. Clay’s own $140,000 to $200,000 posting owns “the objects, functions, tables, flows, automations, and integrations that keep our revenue motion running cleanly.” Sierra’s asks for systems “that turn signal into pipeline, across enrichment, scoring, routing, and outbound activation.” ClickHouse’s ends on the clause that names the job: “turn those opportunities into systems people actually use.” This is the catalog.
- The software engineer on the GTM team. OpenAI’s $266,000 to $405,000 postings ask for full-stack products and agent evaluation loops for sales and marketing. Anthropic’s four postings sit at $320,000 to $405,000. These are software engineering salaries that happen to sit in a GTM org, and the bar is production code.
Above all three sits management. Clay’s GTM Engineer Manager for Seller Efficiency posts $240,000 to $265,000; Brex’s Engineering Manager for GTM Engineering posts $240,000 to $300,000.
Here the library picture needs a fence around it. The catalog builder is not a better person than the reference librarian, and a team needs some of both. The difference is in what each one’s hours produce: one answered request, or a thing that answers requests without them.
What moves a GTM engineer up the pay ladder?
Skills move you some of the way. Bloomberry found SQL and Python each in 38% of GTM engineer postings, and Clay’s $140,000 to $200,000 posting asks for 6 to 10 years in technical RevOps or similar work. The software band asks for production code. Those are real gates, and they are the part salary guides already cover.
The postings say something the guides leave out. Read the verbs in the higher bands. Clay’s manager posting wants every automation to “measurably improve how we sell,” wants the team to “track performance, adoption, and business impact of everything you build,” and wants intake frameworks that “align ad-hoc requests to strategy.” Baseten wants the engineer to “get insights in front of reps.” ClickHouse wants “systems people actually use.” And the line that describes the promotion itself: mentor engineers “from ticket-takers to strategic problem-solvers who own outcomes, not tasks.”
Think it through from the hiring manager’s chair. A GTM engineer who spends the week answering “can you pull me a list of VPs of finance at Series B fintechs” from five reps is doing work the company values, and the company can count that work only in tickets closed. A GTM engineer who turns that request into a table every rep can run, and then shows how many lists the reps built, worked and closed, has made something the company can count in pipeline. The second engineer has the evidence a $240,000 manager posting asks for. The first has a queue.
The list desk caps the job, and Clay’s own guide shows why: GTM engineers there are measured “by metrics like meetings booked and hours saved,” and an engineer stuck fetching lists has no hours saved to show. The way off the desk runs through the reps. The table has to reach them where they already work, and someone has to see what they did with it.
How should you read a GTM engineer salary offer?
Whether you are hiring one or becoming one, the same checks turn a number into a comparison:
- The pay type. Base, bonus, commission and equity, written separately. Glassdoor’s self-reported figures carry $48,000 to $90,000 of additional pay; a posted range usually does not.
- The job behind the title. Count how many of the posting’s bullets are requests from one team and how many are systems other people run. That ratio predicts the band better than the title does.
- The benchmark. The BLS sales engineer median of $124,900 is the nearest established occupation. A systems-builder offer below it at a venture-backed company in New York or San Francisco sits under the postings we pulled.
- The posted range. In New York the employer must post one. Ask for it everywhere else; it is the employer’s own number, written before your interview.
- The adoption question. Ask how the team will know your tables are used. A company that already counts runs by rep and lists worked is a company that can pay you for the reach of your work, because it can see it.
Where does Supered Prospector fit for a GTM engineer?
Clay plus Supered is the best way for a sales team to prospect: GTM engineers build in Clay, reps never open Clay. For a GTM engineer, that is the road off the reference desk, and the GTM engineer page for Prospector has the long version.
- Flows, built once. You build named flows in Clay (person enrichment, a buying committee, a phone waterfall), each tied to a table and a destination, the CRM on the account or your sales engagement tool. Reps pick the flow from a Push menu. “Your logic stays yours: waterfalls, tiers, tags, and sequence variables.” Start with the Supered Clay template or bring your own tables; the Clay templates guide and the Clay workflows guide cover what to build first.
- Reps running your table. Reps get your table as a button in Sales Navigator, on a company website, or on a HubSpot, Salesforce or Pipedrive record. Navigator leads go to a prospect list, and the rep pushes the list to your Clay table. Before pushing, the rep sees who owns the record and a flag when the person was already prospected, so there is no duplicate work across reps.
- Proof that it ran. Leaders see every list as Found, Worked or Closed, and a closed lead ends the way your process says: Qualified, Recycled or Disqualified. Those lists give you the adoption evidence the higher postings ask for, and they are how the Clay budget grows.
Prospector runs inside the Supered Chrome extension on your team’s own Clay account and credits, and reps never log into Clay. Prospector works within LinkedIn’s terms and does not copy search results in bulk; the contact data comes from Clay’s waterfall on the customer’s Clay account, across Clay’s 200+ data providers. It costs $45 per rep per month billed annually, from one rep. The rep loop is on the sourcing use case, the product on the Prospector page, and the other ways to put Clay in a rep’s browser in the Clay Chrome extension guide. This is a salary guide, so plainly: a tool does not raise anyone’s pay. It changes what your weeks produce, and what you can show for them.
Choose something else if:
- No Clay account. Prospector needs one. Teams not on Clay yet can start with Clay itself, and RevPartners, the company I founded, is a Clay Elite Studio Partner that builds and tunes Clay tables with teams that want help; the Clay agency guide covers how to pick any agency.
- A GTM job that is not about prospecting. If your work is quote-to-cash, billing data or warehouse models, the Ramp and Decagon kind of posting above, Prospector does not touch it.
- A preference to build the rep surface yourself. The software band above builds internal tools in code. If that is your team, you may not want a product in the middle.
Why trust this guide?
Before Supered I started RevPartners, a HubSpot partner that did only sales implementations, sold roughly twice as much Sales Hub as any other partner, and reached HubSpot’s Elite tier in 13 months. We hired and worked beside the ops builders this title now describes. Supered is the #1 sales enablement app on the HubSpot marketplace, rated 5.0 from 122 reviews there and 4.9 out of 5 from 81 reviews on G2 (checked October 1, 2026). The disclosures: we make Prospector, which sells to teams with GTM engineers, and every salary figure above comes from a named source or a posting you can open, dated October 2, 2026.
What we recommend
For a GTM engineer pricing their next role, anchor on posted ranges for the job you do, never on a single average. If you build systems the whole team runs at a venture-backed company, the postings we pulled center on $151,200 to $220,000 in base; if your week is mostly fetching lists and launching campaigns for one team, the modeled $78,000 to $116,500 band is the market you are being priced in, whatever the title says.
The move between the two is written in the postings themselves. Turn requests into systems. Get those systems to the people who need them where they already work. Then measure whether they were used, because adoption is the line on Clay’s own $240,000 manager posting, and a GTM engineer who can show it has the number the next raise is built on.
For hiring managers the same reading cuts the other way: a systems-builder offer at a venture-backed company below the BLS sales engineer median of $124,900 will compete against postings that start at $137,000.
What a GTM engineer builds first matters as much as what they earn; the buying committee guide and job-change tracking are two of the plays reps ask for most, and direct dials is the phone flow behind the third.
